JAMES's Story

Text size

Aug. 4, 1944—Feb. 7, 2016 James Powell was born August 4, 1944 to the late Hubert Powell and Effie Simpson Powell. He was the youngest of four children.  The family lived and worked on their farm in the Big Sinking area.  At age 71, James left this life for a better one on Sunday, February 7, 2016 at home with his family. On December 20, 1964, James and Carolyn McKay were united in a marriage that was to last for 51 years.  This union was blessed with two children—Cara Wynn and James Allen. James and Carolyn worked in jobs in different states before returning to Wayne County in 1968. They bought the family farm so that James could fulfill his passion for working the land.  He loved farming; therefore he worked very hard and took pride in all he did. He deeply loved his family and worked with and taught his children in a manner that instilled a good work ethic to help them through life. He accepted Christ as his Savior at an early age and was a member of Clay Hill Baptist Church at the time of his passing. Learning how to do new things always captured his interest as well as using his creative talents to improve any job or machine. His hobbies included deer hunting and fishing.  On the farm he loved scouting for deer before the season. After retirement, James and Carolyn traveled in the U.S. They spent several winters in Florida where James could go fishing every day he wanted. He is survived by his wife—Carolyn; daughter—Cara Wynn (Randall) Cole; son—James Allen “Jay” (Suzanna) Powell; grandchildren—David Cole, Caitlyn Cole, Dylan Powell, and Kallie Powell. He is also survived by one brother—H M (Louise) Powell; two sisters— Geneva (Boyce) Denney, Kathleen (Robert) Burkhart; and sister-in-law— Mary Elizabeth “Boots” Gossage. Also surviving are four aunts—Christine Gregory, Lena Phillips, Ora Thompson, and Cora Roberts along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, February 11, 2016 in the funeral home chapel with Bro. Kenneth Dick and Bro. Charles Eugene Dick officiating. Burial was in the Elk Spring Cemetery. Hickey and Son Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
