Josephine Hammond, age 91, of Spiceland passed away Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at the Waters of New Castle. She was born September 28, 1925 in Quinton, Ky. to the late Walter and Hattie (Hughes) Nicholas.
She was a member of the Spiceland United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years.
She loved being a part of community activities, and spearheaded the church mincemeat fundraiser.
She enjoyed cooking, quilting and loved spending time with her
family. She was a very caring person who put others first and
volunteered with the Red Cross when her husband was in the service.
She is survived by two grandchildrenJohn C. (Jennifer) Hammond of Hilliard, Ohio, and James C. (Angie) Hammond of Fishers; great-grandchildrenKaylyn, Emma, Jackson, Parker and Brooklyn Hammond; two sistersShirley Clark and Francis Madden; daughters-in-lawLynnette (Tony) Hammond Siler of Burkesville, Ky. and Peggy Hammond of Indianapolis; friend and caretakerKaren Ostermyer and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husbandCecil Hammond, whom she married September 2, 1943; sonsJack Eric and Steve Lee Hammond; sistersFonza Parker and Marcella Maloney; brothersAmos, Andy and Jerry Nicholas.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2017 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Carol Wiley officiating. Burial was in the South Mound Cemetery.
