Vernon W. Dick was born May 6, 1917 and passed away April 4, 2016 at the Wayne County Hospital. He was the son of the late Charley and Ella Gregory Dick. He is survived by one daughter—Mary Barnes; two grandchildren—Greg (Danielle) Barnes and Kathy (Dusty) Vinson; three great-grandchildren— Carley and Cuyler Vinson and Hattie Barnes; two sisters-in-law—Vera Turpin and Betty Decker along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife—Ina; daughters—Wilma and Rina Kay; son-in-law—Hugh E. Barnes, Jr.; brothers—Elbert, infant brother Herbert and Clyde; sisters—Gertie Dodson, Mae Ramsey, Derlie Anderson and Etta Ferrell; he was also preceded in death my many nieces and nephews. He was a member of Big Sinking Baptist Church, where he served many years as trustee. He served in the Army during WWII. He was stationed in England and France. He received an AME Theater Ribbon, two Bronze Stars, American Defense Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 7, 2016 in the funeral home chapel with Bro. Rayburn Sweet and Bro. Kenneth Dick officiating. Burial was in the Elk Spring Cemetery . Hickey and Son Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
